What follows becoming a naval GM?

I'm planning on becoming an EOD tech in the navy but since that has the hardest EOD school I'm also carefully planning other ratings I would like to have if I wash out of EOD school, so I was wondering what follows becoming a gunners mate in the navy? Do you have to do anything special in training? How hard is the training? and what are their regular duties both stateside and when they are shipped out to wherever?
